John Paul the Great Catholic University Board of Trustees

Two highly respected San Diego area business leaders have been elected to serve on the Board of Trustees of John Paul the Great Catholic University. Mike Murphy is president and chief executive officer of Sharp HealthCare and Margot Kyd is a recently retired SDG&E executive.

'We are so pleased to welcome Margot and Mike to our board, as they strengthen our business and non-profit management expertise as we position the university for continued growth,' said Alan Lane, President and CEO of Silvergate Bank, La Jolla and chair of the JP Catholic University trustee board. 'In addition to being highly respected business and community leaders, Margot and Mike are deeply committed to the mission of the university. All of us on the board look forward to working with them on new initiatives to create an even more vibrant university for our students and our local San Diego community.'

Margot Kyd joined SDG&E in 1980 as a financial analyst and retired 30-years later as Vice President of Supply Management and Fleet Services for SDG&E/Sempra Energy, providing service to 3.4 million consumers in San Diego and Southern Orange Counties, and for SoCalGas, the nation's largest natural gas distribution utility, serving 20.1 million consumers. Previously, she served as SVP of Business Solutions and Chief Environmental Officer for Sempra, and in various executive positions for SDG&E from 1986-1998, including VP of Human Resources and VP of Marketing & Customer Service. Margot currently serves on the Board of the Los Angeles Urban League, as Chairman of the Board of Life Perspectives and Catholics for the Common Good, and an area councillor for the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. Margot is a former Trustee of the University of San Diego, the National Association of Women Business Owners-L.A. Foundation, the National Minority Supplier Development Council, the San Diego United Way, and the Arthritis Foundation. She is a former Chairman of the Board for Catholic Exchange and the Women's Resource Committee. Margot graduated summa cum laude from Arizona State University with a master's degree in business after receiving her bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky.

Mike Murphy is president and chief executive officer of Sharp HealthCare. He oversees a workforce of more than 15,000 employees, 2,600 affiliated physicians and 2,100 volunteers. They provide care and service in a fully integrated not-for-profit system that includes four acute-care hospitals, three specialty hospitals, two affiliated medical groups, five urgent care centers, three skilled nursing facilities, home health, hospice, state-of-the-art outpatient facilities and a health plan. A Southern California native, Mike is a graduate of California State University at Long Beach and is a certified public accountant. He served as chairman of the board of the Greater San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2005, and he is a member of the board of directors for the State of California Chamber of Commerce. He is also on the board of directors of the Foundation for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and he is a member and supporter of several community-based health and social service organizations.

John Paul the Great Catholic University, founded in 2003, is a private university located in the Scripps Ranch area ofSan Diego. It offers undergraduate degrees in Business and Entertainment Media, including screenwriting, directing, producing, animation and video gaming. It offers graduate degrees in Film Producing and Biblical Theology, along with certificate programs in Theology and Philosophy. It began operations in 2006 and currently has 120 students earning degrees on campus and 45 students exclusively online. It has achieved candidacy status from WASC, the regionally accrediting agency and is 5-years into the approximately 8-year accreditation process.
