Mission Statement

Guided by the University's commitment to the personal success of its students through academic formation, the Center exists for the benefit of all students, regardless of writing level. By encouraging critical thinking, university-level writing, and academic inquiry and research, the Center prepares students to participate effectively in academic, political, and cultural arenas. We believe that by becoming better writers, students will be better equipped to carry out the University's mission to impact culture for Christ.

Goals

  1. To provide one-on-one, face-to-face writing assistance to all students enrolled at JPCU, regardless of writing level. We believe that all students benefit from personal feedback.
  2. To build up JPCU's academic community by encouraging critical thinking, university-level writing, and academic inquiry and research.

Student Guidelines: What to Expect from a Tutoring Session

The Writing Center's goal is to make students better writers not just for a single project, but for future writing projects as well. Students should:

  • Come to their session having identified areas of concern that they want help with, even if they simply want to discuss their essay topic before beginning to write.
  • Expect that tutors will listen to their concerns, read their work, and respond accordingly.
  • Expect tutors to point out areas where grammar, spelling, punctuation, and word usage need correction, but they will not proofread papers or be copy-editors.
  • At the end of the session, students can expect tutors to suggest the next steps they need to take.
