Student Guidelines: What to Expect from a Tutoring Session
The Writing Center's goal is to make students better writers not just for a single project, but for future writing projects as well.Students should come to their session having identified 2-3 areas of concern that they want help with.
Student should expect that tutors will listen to their concerns, read their work, and respond accordingly.
Students should not expect tutors to be copyeditors. Tutors will be able to point out areas where grammar, spelling, punctuation, and word usage need correction, but they are not here to proofread papers.
At the end of the session, students can expect tutors to suggest the next steps they need to take and to help set goals for the project at hand.
The Center is a free service, and appointments are required. Each session is 30-40 minutes. Penalty for no-shows: students will be locked out of the system for the quarter after 2 missed appointments.
Advanced cancellations are okay.
Students will be asked to fill out a short form that the Center will keep for its records that includes: name, date, class for which they are receiving help, what kind of help they are asking for.
Students are required to bring:
- Any stage of writing from invention to arrangement to delivery. This may include brainstorming, outlines, rough drafts, or revisions. You may bring in a hard copy (preferred) or the project on laptop.
- Assignment sheet from professor. Be prepared to talk about the assignment and what the professor is asking. (As a proactive measure, professors are encouraged to send their assignment sheets to the Writing Center if they know they will be sending students to the Center for assistance.)
- Something to take notes on. Be prepared to take notes during your session.
