New Catholic University changes name to John Paul the Great Catholic University

The Board of Trustees of New Catholic University approved the changing of the name of New Catholic University (considered a temporary name from the outset) to a new permanent name - John Paul the Great Catholic University. The Board notified the Diocese of San Diego and at the request of Bishop Brom retained the word Catholic in the name of the University. The Board has filed a Certificate of Amendment of the Articles of Incorporation with the State of California. Read full Press Release on name change.

Pope John Paul II will be a model for all students at John Paul the Great Catholic University to imitate. He

  • had an abiding love of Christ, an ability to forgive and to open his heart to all.
  • went to the very ends of the earth proclaiming the Gospel with intensity and urgency - "be not afraid".
  • gave himself unreservedly, to the very last moment, for Christ, in whom he was profoundly rooted.
  • was the greatest transformational global leader of the 20th century.
  • recognized the cultural globalization produced by the power of the media and called for a deep understanding of both the culture of our time, and the language, nature and characteristics of the media (traditional and high-tech), so that the media can be used correctly and competently, leading to a genuine enculturation of the Gospel.

To remain true to the spirit of Pope John Paul II, John Paul the Great Catholic University will and must:

  • Be genuinely Catholic, committed to the pursuit of truth and the establishment of a living synthesis of faith and reason, while always preserving and fostering its Catholic identity in fidelity to Christ and to his word as it comes from the Church.
  • Exist principally to proclaim the Gospel.
  • Be at the forefront of the Church's dialogue with culture, always searching for innovative ways to enable the light of Christ to shine brightly, and to offer convincing witness, within a pluralistic society, to the Church's teaching.
  • Strive, in accordance with the Gospel, to be an ever more effective agent of the new evangelization in society, working to overcome every separation between faith and life and embody a clear testimony to the truth.
  • In the content of the education, make constant reference to Jesus Christ and his message as the Church presents it and must aim at an integration of knowledge within the context of a vision of the human person and the world, which is enlightened by the Gospel.
