1. Update on New Catholic University’s application to the State of California BPPVE for approval
NCU received our first response from the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education
(BPPVE) about 3-weeks ago. As expected, it contained a list of about 20 (out of the original 168)
questions that required more thorough answers. The application was first submitted in July 2004.
More importantly, NCU now has a 'real person' to talk with at BPPVE. We have had two separate
conversations with the Senior Education Specialist for Degree programs and she has been very helpful.
She appears very willing to work with us to ensure we get the approval. She wants to make sure that NCU
'dots all the i's and cross all the t's'. So we feel confident that we will get through the application
process within 2-months.
2. Lease of Classroom Facility
The BPPVE requires from NCU a 'letter of intent' for the lease of a classroom facility.
NCU needs approximately a 6,000-8,000 sq ft classroom facility. This should have 4-large classrooms,
a large general purpose/lounge room, a few small offices, and a 'seminar' room. The facility can be shared.
NCU will require the classroom facility daytime Mon-Fri. The dorm space lease is not regulated - so its
lease can be decoupled from the classroom lease. The classroom facility must have an ambience appropriate
for an institution of higher-learning, albeit a temporary location. While NCU will ensure that the
spiritual and learning environment will be top-notch from the outset, we expect the leased facilities,
while functional, will not have the character of a well-established and well endowed campus.
NCU plans to build its own campus by 2016.
The Board of Trustees will appreciate any help you can provide to help us on identifying a leased
classroom and dorm facility. Please call us at 858-672-9080 with your suggestions.
3. How you can help NCU
NCU needs your generosity at this time. As NCU begins its major development effort for its launch in Fall
2006, we are reaching out and asking people to help financially, as we accept the challenges of the late
Pope John Paul II to build a truly great Catholic university committed to proclaiming the Gospel, the news
of Jesus Christ, and to training students to use the media to reach into to our homes in this expanding
spiritual desert in our nation.
If you won't do it - then who will? Please be generous - the treasure of our faith is priceless.
Also, we encourage you to please consider introducing people you know to NCU. Many are moved by the vision
and promise of NCU to shape future Catholic leaders and to influence morality in our society. We can't be
shy about this mission - there is much at stake. Remember John Paul II's urging to us to 'be not afraid'.
We thank you for your prayers, your generosity and for your role as Ambassadors for NCU.
4. NCU receives a donation of 10,000 theology and philosophy books
Fr Tony May, a priest in the Diocese of San Diego and the new Pastor of St Elizabeth's in Julian has made
a very generous donation of approximately 10,000 books to NCU. The books are primarily in the fields of
Theology and Philosophy, but include books on politics and business. Fr May had been Associate Pastor at
Mary Magdalene for the past 6 years. NCU very much appreciates this very generous donation..
5. NCU Scholarship Gala to launch the establishment of a Scholarship Endowment Fund - Sept 17th, 2005
Mark your calendars now - reserve the evening of Saturday September 17th, 2005 for the NCU Scholarship Gala.
The Scholarship Gala will launch the truly critical effort to build the NCU scholarship endowment fund.
The black tie optional event will be held at the beautiful La Jolla Hyatt, which hosted NCU's
wonderfully successful Inaugural Gala in Sept 2004.
6. Saluting Our Volunteers
Dr Stan Williams, who has been instrumental in crafting NCU's Film curriculum, has just signed a
Book Agreement to publish his manuscript: 'THE MORAL PREMISE: The Guiding Principle to Writing and
Making Great Films'. THE MORAL PREMISE (a working title) describes how successful motion pictures
are always structured around a psychological premise based on true moral values, and how
screenwriters can appropriate the structural elements of the moral premise to write successful
movies.
Congratulations Stan!
