Martin was raised in Stuebenville, Ohio. He is the third in his family to graduate Franciscan University, where his father is a Professor of Philosophy. Martin and his wife Sara, and their son Peter live in San Diego.

Education
Martin graduated Franciscan University in 2006 with both an BA in Political Science and an MBA. He was the Founding Editor of the Franciscan University student magazine Lumen Vincens.
